Officially, this class is

ENGL 350: Electronic Literature

and it is scheduled at 2:00 - 3:15, TR

A frequently asked question: What actually is Electronic Literature?

In short, electronic literature is hypertext fiction, net.art, interactive fiction, videogames, flash animation, Twitter Bots, poetry generators, computer-generated books, etc., &c. and et cetera.

There are longer, more thorough and scholarly answers, catalogs and directories of works to explore. The Electronic Literature Organization has now published four anthologies of electronic literature.

And new work is emerging all the time! Several online literary zines specialize in works that embrace the possibilities of digital poetics, but thousands of independent creators are sharing their work through their own websites or indie gaming hubs like itch.io.

It's an exciting world to explore, and it can be disorienting! Not to worry, the trip is well worth the effort.

This class is a survey of historical and contemporary creative work produced under the broad umbrella term, Electronic Literature. Categorically, these are "born digital" literary works that can only exist on computers. Some specific sub-genres or modalities include: hypertext fiction, interactive fiction, computer-generated poetry, playable media, net.art, and more. We will study the history of electronic literature and -- to understand it better -- we'll produce our own.

It is an upper-level Literature elective for English Majors, and it can also count as an elective for those completing a Major in Communication and Digital Studies or a Minor in Digital Studies.
